Tips for Getting Back Into Shape

Tips for Getting Back Into Shape

It’s a new year and you’re ready start working out again. The only problem is, when you try working out you feel out of shape and it hurts. Getting back into a workout regimen can feel impossible, but don’t be discouraged. Easing into a new exercise plan can be easier than trying to start at the same level you once were at. Here are a few tips for anyone who plans on hitting the gym after taking a long break from exercising.

Take it slow and start with the basics

If you haven’t exercised in a while, it’s best to not push yourself too hard. Create or find an exercise plan that starts at a beginner level and can be modified to become more challenging as you work out more. This will prevent you from becoming discouraged at the beginning of your fitness journey and will help you push yourself as exercising becomes easier.

Get enough sleep

Getting the proper amount of sleep is crucial to helping your body recover from difficult workouts. You should try to get at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night as less time does not allow your body to fully recharge.

Find a workout partner

Working out with someone else will help motivate you and keep you accountable. You can do exercises together and help each other reach your goals. You may also choose to workout at the same place but do different exercises. Not everyone enjoys working out with other people so it’s important to figure out what works best for you and to not feel guilty about enjoying being alone.

Eat healthier meals

Eating healthy, protein-rich meals will help support your workout goals and give you more energy. The Fit Father Project suggests forming a diet that “is not restrictive, is easy and is sustainable for the long-term.” Don’t pick a diet that you won’t stick to and is difficult to follow. Choose healthy meals you enjoy and are easy to cook so you don’t feel the urge to return to your old diet.
