Tips for Healthy Eyes

Our eyes are one of our most important organs and having healthy eyes should not be taken for granted. Maintaining proper eye health is both important and simple. From seeing an eye doctor regularly to eating nutritious meals, there is a wide variety of ways to protect these valuable organs. Here are a few tips for having healthy eyes.

 

1. Clean your contact lenses properly

Use contact solution to clean your contact lenses before putting them in and before taking them out. It is important to wash your hands properly before handling your contact lenses as this reduces your risk of eye infection.

2. Don’t wear your contact lenses for too long

Daily wear contact lenses, the kind that is supposed to be removed at the end of each day, are not supposed to be worn for more than 14-16 hours each day. The longer you wear your contacts, the higher your risk for eye infection is. Your risk of infection is even higher if you wear your lenses overnight.

3. Wear sunglasses

Protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. The National Eye Institue suggests wearing sunglasses “that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.”

4. Have regular, comprehensive dilated eye exams

Visiting your eye doctor regularly is the best way to know that your eyes are healthy. By dilating your eyes, your doctor is able to see the back of each eye clearly and check for signs of disease.

5. Eat well

Eating nutritious foods rich in certain vitamins can help you maintain good eyesight. Vitamins C and E, as well as Zinc, are a few nutrients that can help protect your eyes from things like cataracts and macular degeneration. WebMD explains that “A well-balanced diet also helps you stay at a healthy weight. That lowers your odds of obesity and related diseases like type 2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults.”

6. Limit screen time

Staring at our phones, TVs, and computer screens for too long can cause dry eyes and eye strain. It is important to limit our screen time and to give our eyes a break whenever possible.

7. Quit Smoking

Smoking damages nearly every part of our bodies so it’s no surprise that it also hurts our eyes. Smoking has been connected to a higher risk for numerous eye conditions that can lead to blindness. Stop smoking, or don’t start smoking if you don’t already, in order to help your eyes stay healthy.

8. Know your family history

A lot of eye diseases are hereditary. Knowing your family’s medical history and telling your doctor about it can help them monitor you for early signs of the diseases that run in your family.
